SAM 26000
and SAM 27000 are modified versions of the Boeing 707
(USAF designation VC-137B/C and VC-137G) and were used
as the primary presidential aircraft from 1962 until
replaced by the VC-25A jumbo jets. SAM 27000 still serves
as a backup presidential aircraft.
SAM 26000 was the first
jet aircraft specifically purchased for use by the President
of the United States. This is the aircraft that took
John F. Kennedy to Dallas and returned his body to Washington
DC after he was assassinated. It was also used by Richard
Nixon to make his historic trip to the People's Republic
of China in 1972.
